Woking Golf Club was founded in 1893 on an area of open heathland in north-west Surrey and has since matured into a testing inland links. The holes are laid out on a low plateau and a hillside leading down to an area of lower land. Excellent use has been made of the gently undulating topography. The course is characterised by long carries over heather to narrow, tree lined, fast running fairways and beautifully sculptured greens full of character and deceptive slopes. Woking has many holes which require astute strategic play and good course management. In order to score well the golfer needs accuracy rather than long hitting, delicate chipping and a sure touch on the greens. In 2007 and 2008 a number of holes were lengthened and championship tees introduced to provide a sterner test for the longer hitters. It was the great golf architect Tom Simpson who defined a good golf course as one that produced entertainment and a test of golf for every class of player. Arguably, more than almost any other course, Woking succeeds in meeting Simpson's ideal. The first view of the course when rounding Pond Corner simply serves to whet the appetite for a feast of golf. In recent years a programme of woodland management has been undertaken, which has resulted in views across the course being established that have not been seen for several generations. The club constructed a reservoir in 2003 and fairway watering is now in place over the whole course, so that the condition of the fairways is now of the highest class throughout the summer months.
